Land of Endless Space
March 6th, 2010 | devoEach year, an epic drama takes place on the plains of the Serengeti, a drama that lends itself to be a spectacle of mass proportion. It is estimated that over one million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of antelope, gazelle and zebra will all make a 300 mile plus, roundtrip journey, following a seasonal pattern of weather, a pattern of life giving rain, rain that in turn grows fresh grass on which to graze.
Lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas all follow, pursuing their pray with an intensity that only hunger can explain while crocodiles also anticipate the season and patiently wait in the Mara river for their quarry.
The Serengeti is Masai tongue for “Land of Endless Space” as it stretches from Northern Tanzania to Lake Victoria, from the Ngorongoro highlands, then on into Kenya. It is the only place in Africa where any migration of this size occurs and all the big cats know it.
Apart from the heavy rains that soak visitors in April and May, the land of endless space is a popular year round destination but you may find that the southern plains offer peak predator sightings during wildebeest calving season, January-March, and Mara river crossings in September-October.
