Each year, an epic drama takes place on the plains of the Serengeti, a drama that lends itself to be a spectacle of mass proportion. It is estimated that over one million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of antelope, gazelle and zebra will all make a 300 mile plus, roundtrip journey, following a seasonal pattern of weather, a pattern of life giving rain, rain that in turn grows fresh grass on which to graze.

Lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas all follow, pursuing their pray with an intensity that only hunger can explain while crocodiles also anticipate the season and patiently wait in the Mara river for their quarry.

The Serengeti is Masai tongue for “Land of Endless Space” as it stretches from Northern Tanzania to Lake Victoria, from the Ngorongoro highlands, then on into Kenya. It is the only place in Africa where any migration of this size occurs and all the big cats know it.

Apart from the heavy rains that soak visitors in April and May, the land of endless space is a popular year round destination but you may find that the southern plains offer peak predator sightings during wildebeest calving season, January-March, and Mara river crossings in September-October.

Those who travel to Africa will need to take the weather seriously if they wish stay dry and comfortable during their journey. Remembering that the seasons are opposite from Europe and North America will help your African travel choices. Choices such as what gear to bring and what cities to visit are amongst the most basic. You should know what to expect during your stay. Our best advice recommends that you prepare with layers of clothing thus remedying any number of conditions. At many times during a cross-county excursion, for instance, you may be in different climates.

Climate in Africa usually ranges from Mediterranean in the southwestern regions of the country to temperate in the interior sections. Subtropical areas in the northeast and a small area of desert like conditions in the northwest can be found.

Traditionally March thru May and then November thru December is when it rains. When I say rains I mean it comes down in buckets. Roads and trails are practically impassable and/or a sopping mess any which way you look at it. 4×4 vehicles are available for hire and may be a necessity during these times. Regular vehicles are quite useable in the drier spells but be aware that it sometimes rains hard outside of normal rainy season expectations.

Johannesburg is mainly of mild climate with mid-winter lasting only about six weeks. July thru August, the nights may be a bit chilly and a jacket would be a comfort on most evenings. Summer is the rainy season rather than winter as in other parts of the country. Winter is normally dry days and cold nights.

Cape Town rainfall is heaviest in June thru August.

Coastal areas such as Durban and Port Elisabeth have warmer temps while higher altitudes, in the winter months can be blanketed with freezing temperatures in cites like Johannesburg and Pretoria.

African travel can be smooth sailing if you know what to expect weather-wise. Enjoy your trip!

What comes to mind when you hear the term luxury safari? It reminds me of when I was a child seeing a big game safari for the first time. I think it was the movie Tarzan but can’t rule out Hatari! with John Wayne. Those were the days. What adventure, what danger, what excitement! When the huge tents went up and the long tables all set with silver, fine crystal and linen. The refined quests dressed in evening gowns and tuxedoes. White glove service the whole way. This just after ruff and tumble, down and dirty tracking for big game. “That’s for me“, I said to myself.

Did you know that you can still experience those lush luxurious accommodations and service of yester year only now with a modern day flair? For instance, you can now go on private game drives using night vision goggles to view the nocturnal habits of large predators such as lion, leopard, cheetah or crocks. There are few providers that can deliver such comforts, even fewer that can meet the requirements of the most discriminating travelers.

The best agent in the US is Premier Tours, they are highly professional and specialize in luxury safaris. They cater to exactly what it is that you want. Their packages include everything from the moment you leave home until the moment you arrive back again, that is, if you ever want to come back. This type of trip is best suited to individually minded travelers. If you dislike distractions and the inflexibility of large group, packaged tours, you may find that an all catered event with incomparable romance and adventure is what you desire. Luxury safaris are only a plane ride away.

What you wear on a real African Safari is an important consideration. So how do you know what the proper safari clothing is? Start by knowing that most of Africa is in the Southern hemisphere so the seasons are reversed from what North Americans and Europeans may be used to. Although it never gets as cold in Africa as it does in Europe and the US, certain parts can get quite cold. Areas close to the equator remain a fairly even temperature year round. Higher elevations are cool and lower elevations are hot. Layers of clothing will be your best choices to pack. Even around the equator the temps at night will chill down considerably so a light jacket or sweater would be recommended. During the day, shorts and tank tops could be worn. Subtle tones that mimic the African bush blend in the best. Think light natural neutral colors. A perfect example is this Travel Vest
Being on safari with someone wearing a bright red shirt or Madras plaid golf shorts would be like trying to fish on a calm, fresh water pond while someone next to you was skipping rocks. Try to blend in with the surroundings, your fellow safari goers will appreciate it.

Your choice of hat should not be taken lightly. It is one of the most crucial element of you safari clothing. A wide brimmed hat that protects not only your precious wittle nose but also the back of your hairless neck is a good choice. The Pith Helmet is a favorite among seasoned safari fans. I like the ones with a solar cell and fan built in. The locals have a name for the tourists that wear only baseball caps, Rooi Nek (red neck). Do yourself a favor and check out this very usefull, albiet rather odd looikng Solar Safari Cool Hat
Make sure your hat can be secured under your chin with a strap or a tie. While on game drives, the open jeeps and wagons allow for stiff breezes. Should a ball cap blow off, an elephant may be attracted to the salty sweat and eat it. This can cause health problems so play it safe and secure your hat. Some guides require it. This one is also a good choice Outdoor Research Seattle Sombrero

Sturdy and comfortable walking shoes that close up should suffice on your African safari tour. That reminds me of a funny story told to me about two comrade travelers who were said to be sitting at a water hole resting, when all at once they both saw a large lion, very close, slowly and deliberately coming towards them. One of the two men grabbed his running shoes and franticly, started laceing them up.
The other man said, “ Do you really think you can run faster than that lion?”
“I don’t have to” he replied. “I only need to run faster than you.”
Which brings us back to proper footwear, something sturdy, comfortable and lightweight that closes at the top should be fine like these Women’s Merrell Jungle Moc
or if you prefer something with a bit more support Wellco Men’s Jungle Military Boot

Sunglasses and sun protection are also must haves. SPF30 or better is recommended.. Safari clothing that incorporates insect repellant is available online and in specialty stores. I haven’t ever worn them so I don’t know if they work or not. Just remember, dress accordingly to the climate and you should have a comfortable trip.

Travel to Africa is easier now simply because of a friendly suggestion made to me by a very close friend. You see, this friend travels extensively and touts to have been almost everywhere. I won’t fill this page with mountains of travel trivia nor bore you with a seemingly bottomless pit list of exotic destinations but I was baffled by some of his recent candor. I admitted to him that Africa had always been somewhat confusing for me.” I don’t know why. It just is.” I said, feeling inadequate in explaining myself. That was when some friendly advice from a good friend and master traveler rolled my way.

That simple advice was that when you are ready to choose an airline, select one of national affiliation. That is, if visiting South Africa, choose South African Air Lines. It doesn’t get much simpler than that. The reason being, you can now ask questions directly to the usually well informed staff, not only when booking the flight but at the airport and in the plane as well. This is especially convenient if you haven’t yet been to the destination country. You can get the latest scoop on all the best attractions, restaurants, hotels, hotspots and even tips on where to steer clear of. It’s as if several pre-guides were at your disposal. In fact most airline employees are sincere, almost joyful in relaying relevant and accurate information. You see, they usually have a personal love and connection with the county being visited. This makes all the difference.

Oh, don’t forget to bring an electrical adapter VP 110 – UNIVERSAL ADAPTER FOR S. AFRICA – CONVERTS PLUGS FROM ANY COUNTRY TO S.AFRICAN OUTLET I nearly forgot to tell you about that one.

Yes, word of mouth or direct verbal communication from friends and associates who’ve actually experienced particular products or services is probably the best resource of reliable information available when it comes to making travel plans to unfamiliar destinations. What was once ominous stumbling through endless mazes of never before visited cities is now so much easier to navigate, so clear of obstructions its as if I‘ve been there before. Its is almost as if looking into the future. Anyway, you get the picture.

Either by car, tour bus or train, travel to Africa can now be a much more pleasant experience. Get out there and have fun!
