What you wear on a real African Safari is an important consideration. So how do you know what the proper safari clothing is? Start by knowing that most of Africa is in the Southern hemisphere so the seasons are reversed from what North Americans and Europeans may be used to. Although it never gets as cold in Africa as it does in Europe and the US, certain parts can get quite cold. Areas close to the equator remain a fairly even temperature year round. Higher elevations are cool and lower elevations are hot. Layers of clothing will be your best choices to pack. Even around the equator the temps at night will chill down considerably so a light jacket or sweater would be recommended. During the day, shorts and tank tops could be worn. Subtle tones that mimic the African bush blend in the best. Think light natural neutral colors. A perfect example is this Travel Vest
Being on safari with someone wearing a bright red shirt or Madras plaid golf shorts would be like trying to fish on a calm, fresh water pond while someone next to you was skipping rocks. Try to blend in with the surroundings, your fellow safari goers will appreciate it.

Your choice of hat should not be taken lightly. It is one of the most crucial element of you safari clothing. A wide brimmed hat that protects not only your precious wittle nose but also the back of your hairless neck is a good choice. The Pith Helmet is a favorite among seasoned safari fans. I like the ones with a solar cell and fan built in. The locals have a name for the tourists that wear only baseball caps, Rooi Nek (red neck). Do yourself a favor and check out this very usefull, albiet rather odd looikng Solar Safari Cool Hat
Make sure your hat can be secured under your chin with a strap or a tie. While on game drives, the open jeeps and wagons allow for stiff breezes. Should a ball cap blow off, an elephant may be attracted to the salty sweat and eat it. This can cause health problems so play it safe and secure your hat. Some guides require it. This one is also a good choice Outdoor Research Seattle Sombrero

Sturdy and comfortable walking shoes that close up should suffice on your African safari tour. That reminds me of a funny story told to me about two comrade travelers who were said to be sitting at a water hole resting, when all at once they both saw a large lion, very close, slowly and deliberately coming towards them. One of the two men grabbed his running shoes and franticly, started laceing them up.
The other man said, “ Do you really think you can run faster than that lion?”
“I don’t have to” he replied. “I only need to run faster than you.”
Which brings us back to proper footwear, something sturdy, comfortable and lightweight that closes at the top should be fine like these Women’s Merrell Jungle Moc
or if you prefer something with a bit more support Wellco Men’s Jungle Military Boot

Sunglasses and sun protection are also must haves. SPF30 or better is recommended.. Safari clothing that incorporates insect repellant is available online and in specialty stores. I haven’t ever worn them so I don’t know if they work or not. Just remember, dress accordingly to the climate and you should have a comfortable trip.
